Our Featured Speaker Kofi Ayim
will be providing a fascinating presentation on

Cudjo “Jack” Banquate: Newark's Revolutionary War Soldier & First Black Businessman

Cudjo “Jack” Banquante was a royal from Ghana (Gold Coast), was sold into slavery, and ended up in Newark, New Jersey. During the Revolutionary War, he substituted for his master Benjamin Coe. He fought gallantly in almost all of the major battle. At the end of the conflict, he was given his freedom and an acre of land in downtown Newark. He eventually became the first documented Black businessman in Newark, New Jersey.

About Our Speaker. Kofi Ayim is a retiree who takes keen interest in the history and culture of his people. He has authored three books: Jack Cudjo: Newark's Revolutionary Soldier & First Black Businessman (2011); The Akan of Ghana: Aspects of Past and Present Practices (2015), and; The Legendary Kwasi Akuffo; and King of Akuapem, Gold Coast (Ghana) (2018).
